Since the latest Wiktionary export from 2025-07-20, we improved all dictionaries. Lets see a small subset of the bigger exciting news.

Note: In the lists below, when we refer to "English dictionaries" or any other lang, it means not only the monolingual English dictionary benefits of the said improvements & fixes, but also all bilingual dictionaries using English as the destination lang (like ES-EN, KO-EN, etc.).

❤️‍🩹 Fixes

• DictFile, DICT.org, and StarDict, file formats are now less polluted with inflexions: meaning variant words are not added to the dictionary directly but properly defined into the format-specific metadata, resulting in more readable output, and smaller files to download (cf reader-dict/monolingual#2473).
• Regression in DictFile, DICT.org, and StarDict, file formats where the Part Of Speech (POS) was on the same line as the pronunciation/gender (cf reader-dict/monolingual#2477). Tests were improved to prevent any future problem of this kind.
• Rename more malformed POS in English dictionaries.

❤️‍🔥 New Features

• Russian dictionaries are back. They were paused in the previous export because of the lack of POS support compared to other langs.
• Multiple etymologies fixes in Catalan dictionaries where Catalan etymologies would be used for non-Catalan words. Another interesting fix is that etymologies are now more complete (before, they were truncated after the first line).
• Full Japanese support on Kobo devices.

💖 Improvements

• English dictionaries are complete, finally. All remaining missed definitions/etymologies are now fixed. There is still a work in progress with the most complex case (cf reader-dict/report-a-word#2), and we are actively working on it.
• Better inflexions support in Catalan, English, and French, dictionaries.
• Overral substantial improvements on English, and French, dictionaries (transliterations, Arab/Japanese/Korean/Chinese/Persian/runes/Sanskrit/scripts/etc. translations, and way more stuff we can't describe in this short notice).
• Improved by a lot Russian dictionaries where non-Russian words were referring to Russian definitions.

Other minor updates include an refreshed dictionary signature using the new project name ("reader.dict").

💔 Temporary Blockers

• German dictionaries are still skipped from the updates due to the inability to retreive the POS (reader-dict/monolingual#2468).
