Rename SharePoint Online Site And Dots

Hi,

Recently we noticed that when you try to change a site URL, it won't allow to use dots. SharePoint Online Admin Center throws an error:

Site addresses can contain only letters in the basic Latin alphabet (A-Z), numbers (0-9), hyphens (-), and underscores (_)."

SharePont PowerShell throws a bit different error when using Start-SPOSiteRename cmdlet:

Start-SPOSiteRename : Error Code: -125,This site address can't be changed. The target URL contains invalid characters or exceeds maximum length 128"

However, if we create a new site it would allow to use dots as a part of site URL.

Does anyone know what is behind the change? Microsoft Support does not tell much.
