Figure out what abbreviations and synonyms are supposed to do, and fix it #1

In the Glossary Administration, abbreviations and synonyms can be defined for entries. If filled out, the glossary output filter does not create links to the corresponding entry if the occur in the parsed text.
The glossary package is quite old, and I have no idea where its original specifications can be found. But it would be a good idea to
- figure out how abbreviations and synonyms were supposed to work (should they be links to the entry, or just simple output text?), and
- fix it if necessary.
