Programatically determining whether fix fixed something

Hi, I'm trying to run fix in a git hook, but it always returns 0 even when code was fixed. Is the only way of determining whether some fixers ran through parsing the output?

The lint goal will return non-zero if the code would be "fixed". This is commonly what is desired in CI.

If by a git hook you meant the unfortunately named https://pre-commit.com/, it will fail if "files were modified by this hook", so one can use fix directly.

It's in a pre-push hook, I'd like to run fix to prepare changes to be immediately commited by me when it fails.
Should I have fixers in check only mode in lint, save its return code, run fix, and then fail the hook depending on just lint's output?

That depends on your hook. Are you hand rolling it (in which the all of the behavior is up to you), or using a pre-existing management tool like pre-commit or lefthook, in which case you would be beholden to their behavior. Internally I use a pre-commit (the tool) hook that runs tailor fmt fix lint check.

Yeah the hook is a completely custom script. Was mainly wonderinf if there's some flag I didn't notice that'd get fix to return non-zero when fixing. Other than that saving the lint seems to be the best. Thanks
