would be good to get a simple fat file system going. i think the best option here is writing a FAT32 driver, since it's simple as can be.
our board has 16 megabytes of NOR flash on it, i reckon we can use that. it's hooked up to the quad-spi peripheral. this user seems to have gotten it to work but on an f7 board: https://github.com/WRansohoff/STM32_ExternalMemory
