Support switching the backend in examples

Quoting from @junkdog on Discord, the idea is to:

> inject a footer element  (via shared code under examples) with links/buttons/something to change the backend on the fly (by restarting the app i guess). this would simplify backend vs backend verification + show differences. only change would be to have a "auto_backend()" at the start of main().
