Converting large RGBA Geotiffs to PMTiles

G'Day Protomaps Community,

I'm embedding the use of pmtiles in our MapLibre project. I'm creating some large raster maps and some geotiff files are between 2GB to 17GB in size. I'm having some difficulties finding the best method to produce good quality raster pmtiles files. Any help would be great, see details below.

What I've done so far

• Using GDAL I created MBTiles with overviews and then used the CLI convert method to convert the MBTiles files to PMTiles files. This worked but I found the overviews to be of poor quality and didnt export the zoom levels I wanted, GDAL would override some zoom levels I selected and they wouldn't be built as overviews. This meant that when the files were zoomed out/downsampled, they would become blurry.
• So then I tried using rio-pmtiles Rasterio plugin, whioch created very nice pmtiles files with great overviews/zoom-levels based on my exact selection, however, it doesnt seem to perform for larger tif files, which is stated in the docs.

What should I try next??
So I guess I'm in a bit of a conundrum, each solution so far has issues, are there any other solutions people have used successfully for large geotiffs?

Did you build overviews into your GeoTIFFs first? Rasterio should read those which should speed up rio-pmtiles.
