Waterfall charts?

Waterfall charts (see also Looker and Microsoft versions) are common in some contexts, for example to disaggregate financial measures or show progression from one value to another through multiple changes. Is anyone working on a syntax for waterfall charts?

This should be doable with a modification to xychart — for example, a series type waterfall (supplementing line and bar) where:

• for each item in the series:
  • the start of each new bar starts at:
    • zero if it's the first bar;
    • the top (bottom) of the prior bar if the prior bar is positive (negative);
  • and extends to the starting point plus (minus) the value of the item in the series if it's positive (negative);
• the baseline for the chart could optionally be set to something other than zero;
• the chart (optionally) ends with a final bar that starts at zero and shows the sum of the items in the series;
