I think the future of plugin diagram will be similar to plugin math. It should be an extension of the code block component. The main blocker for now is that I can not find a well maintained codemirror language pack for mermaid.

If you want to try. You can take a look at how it's implemented and users will still be able to get the diagrams. But there'll be no syntax highlight support.
