"brew: command not found" after installation 🤔

Hello, I have a new mac and I have just installed homebrew successfully. But now I get "brew: command not found" when I try to brew install anything or access brew doctor. Can anyone lend a hand? Many thanks!

Brew only sets environment variables that brew uses. Everything else is up to the user.

hi, @ffortitude @SMillerDev same thing happened. However, pasting those 2 commands is not working either because it is not taking any input no matter how many times I quit and reopen
the terminal. I cannot use terminal at all. Please help!!

The problem is slightly different here because it seems you only have part of the command in your ~/.zprofile file. You can type Ctrl+C to allow you to use the terminal again.

Additionally, you will want to edit the ~/.zprofile file and make sure there is a line saying exactly eval $(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)' and no other lines referencing the brew command.

Yeah, looks like Codespaces use a seriously weird startup framework. I've never seen .profile processed after .bashrc In Real Life, and it's definitely not "kosher" in terms of the standard bash invocation workflow.

I agree that defaulting to .bashrc is not a good idea. I also see the argument of keeping the next steps as concise as possible so that users don’t skip them. And putting two parts of the next steps, “do this … .profile if bla bla, do this … .bashrc bla bla” would just be confusing to many users. I honestly can’t think of a better next steps than the current state.

I’m not sure if that justifies the unusual sourcing behavior (the order of which file is sourced first). Does .bashrc have a line along the lines of . ~/.profile? I can’t see how else it would source .bashrc and then .profile. I tend to see the opposite: a line in .profile that conditionally sources .bashrc if the login shell is interactive.

using the two commands in next steps worked, then openin ~/.zprofile file and eliminating all spaces and then using echo "export PATH=/opt/homebrew/bin:$PATH" >> ~/.zshrc is what worked for me

If your terminal is a zsh interactive non-login shell, then I recommend putting the eval command in .zshrc rather than only modifying PATH, especially if brew doctor complains. If it doesn’t complain, then your current setup is probably fine as-is.

That's not what the command says to do at all
It says to do:

echo 'eval $(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)' >> ~/.zprofile

and after do:

eval $(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)

it sure sounds like your return key got held down/bounced.

I don't remember what in the installer script would ask you a y/n question, but yes is a program that does exactly what you saw: spit out an infinite number of ys. I suspect what happened is that:

• the installer stopped at that point for some reason, dropping you back into your shell
• you thought it didn't accept your yes for some reason, so you typed it again
• your shell obediently ran the yes command

Seems like this problem still exists in 2025...

So I have a brand new Mac Mini M4 with MacOS 15.3 on it, first thing I'm trying to do is install drupal CMS which requires ddev which requires orbstack and then requires homebrew. I tried installing the homebrew pkg from the github like the homebrew website recommends, and then afterwards when I type brew it can't find the command. so I type the full path to brew and it does find it and recommend I add brew to the $PATH, but it looks like the suggested command to add brew to the path doesn't work...

So what exactly is the proper way to add homebrew to the zsh $PATH variable when running in MacOS 15.3 terminal on Apple Silicon? The .zshrc file was created when I ran that command, but only the homebrew path was in there, nothing else (and it doesn't show up when I echo $PATH)

The pkg installer likely showed the full steps to take. But let me break them down for you so you get the logic behind them.

echo 'export PATH="/opt/homebrew/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

Really just writes the export command to the shell startup script as you've noticed. But because it's the startup script that will only run when the shell starts. So you can restart your terminal, or you can take the thing that it would run and run it in your current window:

export PATH="/opt/homebrew/bin:$PATH"

This then exports the PATH variable that your shell uses to find executables with an extra entry for Homebrew at the start.

Hmm actually you may be right. I can't really re-run the pkg installer, but I did find this file in the git which I assume was displayed at the end of the install, and I just breezed past it...

Which says I should get homebrew to be in my PATH variable, but actually recommends the following for Apple Silicon:
eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)" instead of that export command. It doesn't actually say HOW one would add this to their shell profile, but does at least mention that for Apple Silicon, .zprofile is the place to put it (not .zshrc)

But let me break them down for you so you get the logic behind them.

My screenshot doesn't show it, but I actually did try restarting the terminal after that, but I suspect (as shown by MansiSharma98 above) that restarting the MacOS Terminal App does not actually "restart the terminal session" so maybe that's why I didn't see any difference after quitting and re-opening MacOS Terminal. Also I'm still not sure if .zshrc actually gets run during startup on MacOS Terminal, but it does seem that .zprofile is run (since there's other stuff in there)

What I'm curious about is which command would be better to run, the export one or the brew shellenv one - and does running brew shellenv actually add the stuff to the path / environment? It's hard to tell what is going on with eval and the $ before the brew shellenv command.

I found documentation for brew shellenv in the man pages, and it does actually say there to use .zprofile on MacOS, so between those three sets of instructions, I'm guessing the ACTUAL best thing to do would be to run echo 'eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)"' >> ~/.zprofile after running the pkg. It would be nice if the documentation would explicitly say this, including the warning I got when running /opt/homebrew/bin/brew doctor after finishing the pkg installer... Just saying as a relatively noob command line learner, things like this that are inconsistent and unclear - especially in the initial install experience - are kinda frustrating. I will certainly look into maybe trying to submit an issue or pull request to this but I have not had much luck doing so on other projects as an outsider / non-coder...

TLDR:

Tip

After installing HomeBrew on MacOS using the PKG installer, make sure HomeBrew is added to your shell environment going forward by running...

• for the newer Apple Silicon Macs:
  • echo 'eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)"' >> ~/.zprofile for zsh (default as of MacOS 15.3) or
  • echo 'eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)"' >> ~/.bash_profile for bash
• for the older Intel series Macs:
  • echo 'eval "$(/usr/local/bin/brew shellenv)"' >> ~/.zprofile for zsh or
  • echo 'eval "$(/usr/local/bin/brew shellenv)"' >> ~/.bash_profile for bash

and then type exit to close the session, after which you can restart the Terminal and test by typing brew doctor.

Sorry for the long winded response, but while I agree that people should learn how to look up stuff like this when approaching new ways of using their computer (like command line), I strongly believe that any install process before people get dumped into the jungle should be as bulletproof as possible. If the documentation can't be updated, at least maybe they will find this discussion as I did.
