Is JXL with Vips broken since 8.17?

Description of issue

I've already reinstalled vips and jpeg-xl, but converting an image to JPEG-XL doesn't seem to work after updating to vips 8.17. This command doesn't throw any error:

vips copy in.jpeg out.jxl[distance=1,effort=9]

It just produces a black image - which is of cause very well compressed ;)
