Project Idea: Minimalist Video Downloader Browser Extension

I’m currently unable to participate directly in development, but I’d like to propose a project idea that could be both practical and widely useful.

The idea is to develop a lightweight browser extension that offers a simple way to download videos from web pages—similar to the video download panel provided by IDM, but much simpler. Key features would include:

• 🔍 Detect video streams on the page.
• 🎯 Display a small, non-intrusive “Download” button over or near the video.
• 📥 Allow users to select resolution or format, if available.
• 🌐 Trigger the browser’s default download behavior—no external download manager needed.

This extension would aim to be minimal, user-friendly, privacy-conscious, and fully open source. It fills a gap for users who want to save online videos without relying on heavyweight or commercial tools.

Such type of extension is generally available. Here the key point is, Google and other TOS implications.

YouTube explicitly prohibits unauthorized downloading of its content. Any extension that directly enables downloading of YouTube videos will likely be rejected or removed from the Chrome Web Store.

Not just YouTube, other platforms like Dailymotion, Vimeo etc. also have simillar cases, i guess...
