Usage of a background thread in PeriodicExportingMetricReader

Was looking at the code and I see PeriodicExportingMetricReader uses a background thread for collecting sdk metrics data and exporting it as per the configured exporter. The latter is IO bound but not sure if the former involves CPU Intensive tasks and is CPU Bound and can impact the main thread ?
Has anyone done any sort of profiling on the impact of this background thread on the main thread ? Or has there been any discussions on an alternate implementations like moving the background thread to a separate process ?
