Dataview Tasks checkbox doesn't add complete date

Hi everyone, I am trying to use the task view on Dataview but I can't seem to get the completed date added if I do that. I want to understand if this is even feasible to add as a feature?

I asked on Discord this afternoon in this message if anyone knows of a way to add Tasks plugin's ✅ 2022-04-26 text when competing a task via a Dataview list or table.

As far as I understand it, task and dataview code blocks are completely independent, each handling clicks in their own way, and I am not aware of any way of typing them together.

I just looked at the Dataview preferences, and see this:

It was Off, but I turned it on, and completed a task.

It added this text: [completion:: 2022-04-26]

This obviously isn't compatible with the Tasks plugin. But I wonder whether you might want to write a script that works on a Markdown folder, and converts that Dataview format to Tasks format?

But fundamentally, these different plugins chose different ways of representing the data.

This is amazing @claremacrae. Thank you very much will have a think regarding my task strategy a bit more now that dataview has a competing mechanism. I see they use the inline field which seems to be the preferred way to handle everything in dataview so I might need to adjust.

I have no preference as to which anyone else uses. Personally, I use Tasks because I need recurring tasks.

recurring is something I want to incorporate as well, I think I was stumbling on an issue when completing that it was not moving it to the next date but I need to revisit this as well. It would be nice if both dataview and obsidian-Tasks were generally using the same standards so that we would fluently move between them based on the situation.

Agreed, but as shown in the links I posted above - that cover exactly this - there are plenty more standards than those two, so unifying them will be a huge amount of diplomatic and programming effort.

I doubt many volunteer plugin authors who already have an existing popular plugin user base to support would realistically have the time to first take on the huge communication effort involved, then update their own plugin and also hope that other plugin authors will do the same.

So FWIW my personal approach has been to:

• pick the one that is closest to my needs, and
• then learn to program in Typescript and understand the code,
• then help the author by trying to take up some of the support slack,
• and soon start making more contributions where they overlap with my needs, or are simple and solve a clear and general need.
