There are a few ways for projects to harmonize the styles of text files for various purposes and programming languages without constraining the choice of editors / IDEs of the contributors / editors.

Dot-editorconfig (/.editorconfig) is one way to achieve that. Nearly every text editor or IDE with more than ten users world-wide has a native or per-plugin way to respect the settings in a root level dot-editorconfig file.
