FieldToFieldMap not working as expected

Hi,

we're migrating one project from an on-premise instance to the cloud.
To allow users to track back changes from the commits to the work items, we introduce a Custom.Reference field and map it using a FieldToFieldMap.
For our last migration (using version 13.0.1) the configuration worked without a problem, however in 16.0.4 the System.Id field is not migrated correctly.

Sample Field Map:

Upon further investigation, the problem lies here and only occurs when a default value is provided due to the if condition.

Is this the desired behavior or should one implement a more type safe behavior here?
