Can gnome-shell font be set?

Does the above line suggest that the gnome-shell font is supposed to be set? I have the home-manager gnome-shell enabled and still the font is not the one I've provided using stylix. I double checked and the font name seems correct. It's Fredoka. fc-match shows it as the first choice.

According to the comment, that setting applies to "some GTK apps" - GNOME Shell doesn't use GTK itself. (Perhaps that code should be moved to the GTK target instead.) However, I can indeed change the font on my system - although potentially this is coming from something at the system level.

I suppose we already are theming it. Applying the fonts should be trivial?

I'm personally theming all my GUI fonts with fonts.fontconfig.defaultFonts in home-manager. It looks like it just works for the GNOME shell too.

Maybe stylix should integrate with fontconfig, but how fonts are currently configured in stylix needs to change to properly support fallback fonts.

That's a great point, @musjj. Hrm... I do have experience doing that. Why does stylix need to set any toolkit or app specific fonts? Perhaps because on macOS fontconfig is not a thing or doesn't work as well?
