CMake Build Failure in grpc-device: Compatibility Update Required

I have been trying to run this command locally cmake .. -A x64 to get the proto files for RFmx gRPC Server APIs and I'm getting the below error:

Or, add -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5 to try configuring anyway.

The below command works for me :
cmake -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM="3.5" .. -A x64

This is not fixed. Specifying -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM="3.5" is a workaround, not a fix.

grpc-labview has the same problem: ni/grpc-labview#462

Reopening because #1182 was a partial fix.

I think you still need to update cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.18.0)

It doesn't seem to be returning an error on the cmake_minimum_required in grpc-device's CMakeLists.txt but on the versions specified by the third_party submodules. (I tested updating the version in grpc-device but still got errors for the submodules using CMake 4.1.0). Updating to the latest for utfcpp, json, and googletest stopped those from reporting the error. Testing locally updating grpc to 1.74.1 (latest release) still shows third_party dependencies that it has failing with the "Compatibility with CMake < 3.10 will be removed from a future version of CMake." error.

Until it is fixed in third_party dependencies I can suggest building with CMake 3.18 which is what our current github actions use or using the workaround of specifying -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM="3.5" for the time being if using a newer versions of cmake.

@maxxboehme Does cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.18.0...3.5.0) work? I think that tells cmake that version >=3.18.0 is required but that the default cmake policies from version 3.5.0 are okay.

Trying that I get this error when using CMake 4.1.0

CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:1 (cmake_minimum_required):
  Policy VERSION range "3.18.0...3.5.0" specifies a larger minimum than

Event when I update the minimum_required version to the following in grpc_device's CMakeLists.txt I still get an error from the third_party submodule.

cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 4.1.0)

I think the problem is that we build the third_party components in submodules so when building there is a cmake_minimum_required specified several times for each dependency we build. For example when I build I get the following error

  Or, add -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5 to try configuring anyway.

If I look in that CMakeLists file I see the following specified.
CMAKE_MINIMUM_REQUIRED (VERSION 3.1.0)
