typeInElement isn't working as expected

I have a simple HTML form:

<form [formGroup]="formGroup">
  <input formControlName="serial" id="search">
</form>

that's controlled by a formGroup:

interface IForm {
  serial: string | null
}

  readonly formGroup = this.fb.group<IForm>({
    serial: null
  })

When I try to "type" into the input it's not working as expected. Here's the failing test:
