when automatic renewal?

hi all,

i received several emails from letsencrypt about expiring domains i set up with nginx-proxy and acme-companion. I got 7 days left. But i'm wondering how that automatic renewal is working? do i have to configure it explicitly? When does acme-companion renew the certificates?
