Using File Reader/Writer to convert a PDF to XML

I'm researching how to pull in a PDF file and convert it to XML (Mirth Connect Server 4.4.1). So far as I've found Mirth doesn't have a way of pulling in the PDF file and parsing it, but all the articles I've found are older.

Is that still the case, or is there a way to pull in a PDF file that Mirth can parse?

What does "convert a PDF file to XML" actually mean? Maybe provide a clear example?

Good question. This would be akin to the Adobe process of converting a PDF file to XML. You end up with something like an HTML document. From there I'd be identifying and harvesting certain elements.
