I can't add a comment to issue #2855 because it has been closed and locked, but FYI I've implemented the functionality requested there as a custom script: netbox-community/customizations#52

It lets you select a pair of devices and for each give a port pattern which is expanded, e.g.

device patchpanel1, rearports, R[1-24]
device patchpanel2, rearports, R[1-24]

or

device rtr1, interfaces, Gi1/0/[1,4,7-8]
device patchpanel1, frontports, F[12-14,3]

All the cables are created with identical characteristics (length, color etc), except that you can specify a pattern for the label as well.
