Mark interface for automation script

Hey,

I am working on some automation right now. For some more visibility and to be sure the automation runs as expected I would like to achieve something like this:

• An administrator changes an interface of a device (e.g. change the state from enabled to disabled)
• The interface is tagged as "change in progress" (or something else)
• The automation runs in the background via ansible
• If the ansible script runs with a positive result, ansible removes the tag from the interface
• If the ansible script doesn't run as expected, or the EDA is not available, the tag stays on the interface

The automation runs as expected, but I struggle a bit with the tagging part. Is it correct, that I cannot add a new tag to the interface via REST API without a pre check which tags are already assigned?
Is there any other way to tag the interface with netbox only so I don't have to rely on another system (maybe custom scripts)?
