Why @AutoMap properties of primitive types are mapped to incorrect type

When using @AutoMap on a property of a primitive type, it is emitted as is to destination as is without any conversion or error. Why does it behave like so? Is it by design? I would expect at least an error.

import { AutoMap, classes } from '@automapper/classes';

class InputClass {
    @AutoMap()
    date: Date = new Date();
}

class OutputClass {
    @AutoMap()
    date!: string;
}

const mapper = createMapper({
    strategyInitializer: classes(),
});
createMap(mapper, InputClass, OutputClass);

const output = mapper.map(new InputClass(), InputClass, OutputClass);
console.log(typeof output.date); // object
