I would love to contribute but documentation please. I don't even know where to begin
apart adding \#*\#, *.bak and *.sw[op] to .gitignore and remove the execute permission
bit from some files.

Please have a look at one of the bugs in this bug tracker. Things marked with enhancement are potential features and things marked with bug are issues that you could work on. If you in general are missing a feature, feel free to just send a pull request directly!

I have already submitted ideas, but there is not documentation on how anything works
so jumping in and start patching is not really that easy. I would suggest to start with
documenting the purpose of each file, then document the protocol.
