Splunk Dashboard index variables

I see that all of the Splunk dashaboards utilize variables for $platformMetricsIndex$ and $platformBenefitsIndex$.

Is there a recommended way to set these variables so they are congruent in all dashboards, or are you expecting us to do a find/replace in the dashboards to change in the xml's?

As a temporary means and potentially a suggested solution I have done the following.

1. replace all occurrences of $platformMetricsIndex$ and $platformBenefitsIndex$ with platformMetricsIndex and platformBenefitsIndex in all dashboards.

2. created macros for them where
   platformMetricsIndex = the metrics index
   platformBenefitsIndex = the benefits index
