Release 2.3.82 – Backup & Restore Feature

Hello everyone,

In version 2.3.82, we are introducing a preview of the new Backup & Restore feature. This feature is in an early stage and is intended for testing and feedback.

This feature was initially announced during our discussions (#34) but was not included in version 2.3.81. While the current release does not encompass all the planned functionalities, we have chosen to start with a streamlined version to ensure a stable foundation.

Accessing the Backup & Restore Page

You can open the Backup & Restore page by entering the following URL in your browser:

chrome-extension://<your-extension-id>/src/html/backups_restore.html

Replace <your-extension-id> with the ID of the modcore Extension Manager as it appears in your address bar. Note: This ID differs for each user due to developer mode.

Feature Overview

1. Create Backups

• Set a custom file name for the backup
• Choose a file format: json, txt, or binary
• Optionally encrypt the backup with a password

2. Restore Backups

• Upload a previously downloaded backup file
• If the backup was encrypted, a password field will appear during the restore process

3. Data Management

• View Stored Data

  • Preview the contents of a backup without downloading it
  • Backups are categorized by storage type to ensure accurate restoration
  • You can browse the data and quickly copy entries to your clipboard

• Clear Data by Storage Type

  • Selectively delete data from specific storage types or all at once
  • The interface shows the size of each storage category
  • Note: Deleted data cannot be recovered. While Cloud Sync recovery may be possible, this has not been tested—proceed only if you are familiar with this process

Known Issues

Based on our testing, the core functionality appears to be stable. If you encounter any issues, please report them.

We are aware of a few UI-related bugs, but there are no known technical problems at this time.

Looking Ahead

This is not the final version of the Backup & Restore feature. We plan to make several improvements and add new functionality in upcoming releases.

Some ideas currently under consideration (not guaranteed):

• Scheduled automatic backups
• Backup history and versioning (e.g., extension_backup_2025-07-01.json)
• Search and filter options for stored data
• And more...
