Version in footer not available in container

When deploying the application in a container by running docker-compose up, the .git file containing information for this to work is not available and git itself is not installed on the container (well it is but then it is removed)This results in the version information in the footer shown as "Unknown"

There is also a missing documentation issue of a runtime dependency on git itself.

This issue is still relevant in the latest docker container setup.
