Azure Databases for VS Code Extension v0.25.0 Released! 🚀

We’re excited to announce the release of Azure Databases for VS Code Extension version 0.25.0! This update brings several enhancements to improve your database management experience.

This release focused on refining our internal architecture, enabling better feature and code sharing across all supported databases. Not only will this allow us to introduce new features faster in the future, but it has already significantly improved the Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (RU) experience.

🚀 Key Features

1️⃣ Revamped Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (RU) Interface

• The user experience has been completely redesigned, introducing rich data exploration features like those available in Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (vCore).

But this update isn't just about revamping MongoDB (RU)—it represents a broader milestone. We have now achieved feature parity across all MongoDB API-supported platforms. Previously, some features were only available in MongoDB (RU) or vCore, but we’ve unified these capabilities to provide a consistent and powerful experience for all users.

2️⃣ Feature Parity Across All MongoDB API Platforms

• Some features were previously exclusive to Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (RU), while others were only available to Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (vCore).

• We've worked hard to unify these capabilities, ensuring a consistent and powerful experience across all MongoDB API-supported databases.

• Now, all MongoDB API users can take advantage of:

  • Collection exploration in Table, Tree, and JSON Views, allowing users to browse, filter, and inspect their data in different formats.
  • Import and export capabilities to and from JSON.
  • Rich auto-completion when writing queries, up to field names, helping users write accurate queries faster with contextual suggestions based on their database schema.
  • MongoDB Scrapbook, allowing scripts to be edited and reviewed locally before executing them via the shell. Previously, this feature was only available for Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (RU), and we’re excited to bring it to all MongoDB users.

This means matter which MongoDB API platform you're using, you'll have access to the same powerful features to enhance your database management experience.

3️⃣ Improved Support for Local Emulators

• All database experiences (Azure Cosmos DB Core API, MongoDB (RU), and MongoDB (vCore)) now offer enhanced support for local emulators, making it easier to use preconfigured or custom connection strings.

4️⃣ Unified Context Menus and Resource Tree Exploration

• Context menus across all database experiences are now standardized.
• Expanding the Azure Cosmos DB node in the resources view now lists all Azure Cosmos DB accounts without delay.
  • We have optimized the behavior so that time-consuming queries are only executed when you start interacting with a selected cluster, improving performance and responsiveness.

📰 Other Improvements

• API Upgrade: Migrating Tree View API from V1 to V2 for improved performance and modularity.
• Added multitenant support for Azure Cosmos DB authentication.
• Creating new Azure Cosmos DB clusters and accounts now opens the Azure Portal directly instead of the command palette wizard.
