Is monaco-editor dead?

The monaco-editor package wasn't updated since the end of the last year. No -dev version are released either.

Is monaco-editor discontinued, or is it just waiting for relevant changes to be made before releasing a new version?

Well they're still merging changes to main, so presumably not discontinued altogether, but I also find myself wondering about the criteria for a new release.

It would be great if there was an official response on this.

Even so, issues like this #4906 are raising warnings internally at my company due to out of date dependencies, and the fact that there's not been a release in a while isn't filling everyone with confidence.

some idea of the timeline for new releases would be very helpful! We're waiting on an upstream change in vscode to make it into monaco so we can start developing a feature on it, but until that happens we're in limbo.

I apologise for the current situation, but this might take a while. Ever since we switched vscode to ESM we haven't managed to update the monaco editor. This is because the monaco editor depends a lot on how web workers are architected and also because it offers AMD packaged source code, and the underlying source code is no longer AMD.

@hediet has worked on restoring the esm variant of the monaco editor, I think we might have a shorter path there, but it will probably be a beta release until we also figure out how to create fake AMD packaged source code from the core ESM source code.

As far as technical reasons for a delay in new releases go, this exactly what I would have expected to be the case. Glad to see some acknowledgement of the issue.

The volume of merged PRs and pre-release builds I've been seeing over the past few weeks in the monaco-editor repo makes me smile. :)

The dev releases are back and the pipeline for the 0.53.0-rc candidate just started to run! (I expect a stable release today or tomorrow)
Sorry for the long break. There were significant technical difficulties and we had other priorities.
