Best way to implement "Colors" option on storefront/admin

I apologize if this question has already been addressed, as I am new to this.

For an e-commerce store that offers t-shirts in various colors and sizes, what is the recommended approach for adding a color option that visually displays the color or custom image instead of a text label, such as "RED" or "BLACK"? Also when user refresh or share the URL, it should reflect the selected color. Additionally, when a different color is selected, the uri should be updated accordingly.

This feature is commonly used, and I am seeking guidance on the most effective way to implement it.
