Hi everybody and welcome!

As you probably know this is part of Mastodon's Fediscovery project. To allow independent search and discovery providers to communicate with fediverse instances we need some basic ground rules. These should also pave the way for other kinds of providers.

And this is where it is at right now: We have specifications for basic provider / instance interaction and a simple "debug provider" to demo the concept and allow to test initial implementations.

All of this has been created in kind of a vacuum. We wanted to be able to present an initial proposal that can actually be implemented to have a basis for discussion.

We are looking forward to any and all feedback, especially from people who can imagine implementing their own provider software, integrate providers in their fediverse project or both.

Feel free to use this thread for any general remarks you might have. I will also post some more detailed questions that still bother me. Also feel free to open your own discussion of these kinds of questions.

P.S.: Please note that the initial fediscovery project is funded by NGI Search and must meet certain deadlines with certain deliverables. As such, we will publish work-in-progress states of the specifications discussed here. This does not mean that anything is finished or that we are no longer looking for feedback.
