This never really works

Every other year I give this a whirl and it fails to build consistently. Usually one can figure out the thing that makes it fail. But I think the main problem is the because of the many options, each build is different so it's never completely broken, but it never works completely either. I understand that this is impossible to maintain, but maybe having a lot less things to pick would help.
