Must the setup function be called?

I use lazy.nvim and have this:

-- Show signs for added, removed, and changed lines.
local gitsigns = {
    "lewis6991/gitsigns.nvim",
    config = function()
        require("gitsigns").setup({})
    end,
}

Now I wonder whether I can remove those three lines, lincluding require("gitsigns").setup({})

Currently a call to setup() is required. I plan to make it optional in the future.
