In module-1/agent.ipynb, there is also parallel_tool_calls. However, changing the parallel_tool_calls does not affect the results; it only shows the tracing of tool calls step-by-step. Is there an update on parallel_tool_calls?

This argument determines whether parallel tool calling is permitted to the model, not whether it will actually be done. It always is up to the model to decide, even if it technically can.

For those don't want the tool function to be executed in parallel, this is not working and the simplest way to do it is just wrapping the function with a lock.
