How to set prompt globally for all buffers?

I'm trying to figure out how to save/set a prompt that I want to use for all my buffers/modes. I've tried to follow this but I think that's meant for something else.

Basically, I have just one use case for which I want to use gptel and that's to rewrite and improve text (not code). I have one prompt, like "Improve style and grammar" that I want to use each time I run gptel-rewrite. Is this possible?

I found the gptel-directives but setting this doesn't seem to change the default/standard prompts:

(setq-default gptel--rewrite-message "Improve style and grammar")

This variable gptel--rewrite-message might be renamed soon to be a user-facing customization option. (The old name should still work for compatibility.)

Thanks, added that to my init.el, re-opened Emacs and tried gptel-rewrite but it was still using the "generic directive" version.

You don't need to change the "generic directive", which is the system prompt. If you read what it says, you'll see that it does not contain instructions specific to the text being rewritten.

gptel--rewrite-message controls the d option with the specific instructions you see in the rewrite menu:

This is where you specify the change you want, and once you set gptel--rewrite-message it should be applied automatically. So you should be able to rewrite with M-x gptel-rewrite r.
