Comparison between Kth & existing tech stacks.

Kth looks like an interesting project but I'm curious as to its genesis. Whenever a new project is offered up it seems to make sense to ask, "as compared to what?". What tools/components does it replace and what are the issues with those tools/components that drove the desire to make a new system. Am I right in assuming this is a replacement for bitcoind? Thanks!
