How to trigger a layer_switch via code/external events

Example:
When i am focused on a specific window, i want kanata to automatically switch to a layer i have designed for that application.
I know how to use sway to trigger events based on which window is focused, that is the easy part.
I also know that i can write a different config for every application and simply include the defsrc of the base config, but having a different config for every application feels icky when the functionality to switch layers within a single config is right there.

I need some way for the active configuration to switch layers based on a non-keyboard event.

I've read the documentation top to bottom a few times, but i begin to get lost at the defcfg options section.
Is what I am trying possible?

Yes, though it is as you found, not documented in the configuration guide. You would use the TCP integration, which isn't officially documented anywhere today, just mentioned in discussions/issues and code.
