change C code to scala-native

In a longterm it would be nice to see scala-native instead of C code.

It's a bit early, but in the long run that would be awesome! Not sure how much would be gained though, since there still needs to be some kind of jvm-nonjvm interface (i.e. jni) and the native part still has to use APIs provided by the host operating system.

I would be interested in this as well. Scala native seems to be the way to go!
