External diff tools does not work when focusing on the diff of a file

Describe the bug
I'm using an external diff tool called patdiff following the instructions here: https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/blob/master/docs/Custom_Pagers.md#using-external-diff-commands. It works fine at the beginning as shown:

However, when I press "Enter" on the file, the diff tool changes back to the original one:

So I'm wondering whether this is expected behavior?

There has been a lot of discussion about this in the past, e.g. in #2117, #2563, #3297, and #4201.

Some work has started on making this possible (see #4332), but there are some problems left that I don't know how to solve (they are mentioned in that PR), so I don't have much hope right now.
