Why does it display “Relay server is unavailable. Connections can only be established when a relay server is not needed for either peer.“ Does this mean that communication can only be done within the same local area network (intranet)? Can it still be accessed across different networks?

The "relay server" in this context refers to the TURN server. Chitchatter uses a free TURN server via ExpressTURN. It's not particularly reliable, which is why you're seeing the message.

Yes, depending on network conditions. For instance, in mobile or corporate networks, connections may not fail to be established between peers when the TURN server isn't working properly.

There’s no way to do that within Chitchatter. You have the option fork and self-host the app and customize the configuration to meet your needs, though. Instructions for doing that are in the README.

There’s no way to do that as an end user, but you could self-host a fork of the project and use an alternative TURN server that you prefer.
