This syntax is not smart; it seems to be inspired by HTML or XML, but the concept is completely different.
The syntax $func<args>$func is not cool either.
The parsing code is not smart either.
The statements like $var $func<arg>$func $var, for example, are not being interpreted as expected.
I would like to radically rewrite it.
Just $something or $(something arguments...) is fine. If you want to include $ in the text, for example, escape it with \.
For each data in the tree, add an on/off flag to indicate whether or not such expansion should be performed or not. If expansion is off, the data will not be parsed. No character escaping is done. And there is no need to get text to replace $SEL, $CLIP, etc. Pasting is easy and fast.
