Discuss how data variables as a combination of BODC P01 parameter and P06 unit codes are being managed. #1
Description
Currently new variables describeb in the semantic header within ICES oceanographic data submission format has to be approved by an ICES data manager, before the given submission can be finally validated and uploaded.
The approval procedure is to approve that the given P01 parameter code make sense for the given P06 unit code, and to enter the conversion algorithm for the given parameter/unit into the ICES default parameter/unit i,e, all parameters in ICES have a default unit used in outputs or downloads to make the data easier to work with for the end users, and last but not least to make sure that nutrients are express in molar units as weight units isn't allowed discuss at nvs-vocabs/P01#166
We have at least verbally approaced BODC to see if a vocabulary could be created describing possible relations between a given P01 parameter code and an associated P06 unit code including the conversion algorithm into a default unit for the given parameter.
This would enable at least ICES to automate the approval procedure - removing the last manual step in the data submission procedure. Moreover I'm sure such a vocabualry would also be useful to EMODnet Chemistry as well as other use cases using the BODC P01 and P06 vocabularies.
What do you recon about this and how we possible could move such an effort forward?
