you can set custom refresh rates, I do it to have my 60hz monitors run at 72, but how exactly would this work for resolutions?

I have my doubts too. Essentially we'd have to... send a larger scale to the app?

I guess the user would be responsible for that. but who would handle the downscaling? can a 1080p monitor even accept a 4k signal? or does the compositor have to size it down first?

@vaxerski idk how everything is working internally, but why not render image at specified virtual resolution, then downscale that to real monitor resolution
and the extra arg could look like so:
monitor = HDMI-A-1,1920x1080@60,0x0,1,superres,3840x2160 - renders everything at 4k and then downscaled that to 1920x1080 to display that on monitor
also reported resolution would be that virtual one ofc, in this case it would be 4k
