Vaxerski told to move hyprwm/hyprland-plugins#330 to here

Problem is, with latest github of hprwayland , these Errors u see when after trying updating the plugins also - bcauce hyprbars doesnt working

no errors, hyprm works like ever

havent tryed all commits later since , like i noticed in a other topic each hyprpm invoke
needs endless time, or than same time a manually git clone needs

BUT i am running the Version of Hyprland from before 4 Days with NO hyprpm Errrors.

did tryed newest git release with Result .-> same permission errors

Same problem here. The permission starting from headersRoot was drw-r--r-x. chmod recursive the headersRoot folder fixes it.

I updated my system yesterday and can reproduce the issue.

OS: Arch Linux
Package: hyprland v0.49.0-1 from the official arch repos

I tried hyprpm purge-cache, as well as deleting the entire /var/cache/hyprpm directory manually, with no success.

It can confirm it does seem to work when I chown and chmod 755 the /var/cache/hyprpm directory recursively.

If you cannot reproduce this issue and need more information, just tell me what you need to know.

@vaxerski While I don't know too much about cpp, I got curious and digged through the codebase a bit.

It seems to me that hyprpm/src/core/PluginManager.cpp:569 might be the cause: This line seems to apply permissions 644 to all files and then adds the execute bit on directories to others, but not to the user and group.

The applied permissions on the directories (645) on my machine would confirm this.

Perhaps it should be a+x or just 755, which would be more obvious imo.

@vaxerski I just built and installed your branch.

First, the hyprpm update command failed, but after some debugging I figured out that I have to add --hl-url https://github.com/vaxerski/Hyprland to the hyprpm update command, because the branch is on a different source URL.

After that, everything I tried worked. (purged cache, updated sources, installed and enabled a plugin)

All directories under /var/cache/hyprpm now have 755 as their permission bits, as expected:

I have three (semi-related) questions (sorry for hijacking this discussion, if you prefer, I can open separate discussions for these):

• I understand that moving plugins to a system directory requires elevated privileges to install plugins, however it is possible to just load a new plugin using IPC / hyprctl plugin load <path>.so, so users can still load arbitrary plugins.

  I'm questioning the value of moving the plugins to /var/cache: Would it even be a security vulnerability if a user could install plugins without elevated privileges?
  A user can execute arbitrary code anyways, (they can just compile and execute a binary). And if a user could install plugins for themselves, no other user would be affected unless they explicitly load a plugin controlled by another user on the system.

  I would've said the previous location in .local/share/hyprpm was perfectly fine (and far more convenient), but perhaps I don't understand the security concern.

• The sudo password is seemingly not cached properly, every hyprpm command will ask me for my password individually. For example, if I have to execute three commands, I need to enter my password three times, even if I executed a different command with sudo before. (It seems to be some somewhat unreliable, because sometimes it skips the password prompt?)
  I have a very long password and would appreciate it if the authentication could be cached properly.
  Would this be possible to improve at all / should I open a new ticket for that?

• Would the path /var/cache/hyprpm really be the correct location for persistently storing compiled plugins? According to the FHS, for files in /var/cache, "the application must always be able to recover from manual deletion of these files".
  I think a more persistent directory would make more sense here

No, it's not. With the recent permission system, it's no longer possible for an attacker to load a plugin un-noticed.

Generally it's good practice to have all executables in system-owned directories to avoid accidental or deliberate tampering.

This especially makes sense with sandboxed apps with potential access to the filesystem.

I don't care what the FHS says here, really. Various things store shit there including pacman. Hyprpm can recover from those files being deleted by running update again.

I am not aware of anything that actively purges /var/cache

You need to run hyprpm add github.com/hyprwm/hyprland-plugins first. This will build the plugins from that repo.
You can then list and enable the individual plugins in that repo (like hyprbars).

You need to add https:// to the github url, I missed that in my previous comment.
And you'll need to execute hyprpm update before hyprpm add.

If you built Hyprland with the latest development version / the hyprland-git package, these commands should work:

hyprpm purge-cache
hyprpm update
hyprpm add https://github.com/hyprwm/hyprland-plugins
hyprpm enable hyprbars

It's probably the easiest if you just wait until the next official release and then try again with the new version.
