I think this will pertain to the active table view, perhaps also the filter table view.
We definitely need to sort by any column in order to use that as a visual support to analyzing the data. And we want to have levels of shading in the cells for numeric data to allow us to quickly, visually see density of values. This would be useful for, for example, network measures like degree, eigenvector, betweeness. A model for this is Seb and Ruth Ahnert's tool (will find a link).
