Customising

I would like to customize the application but I am having trouble understanding the components of the application. I want to run the frontend built into a PHP application and I want to run the backend separately on a server. When I npm run build it generates nonsense JS in the www/assets directory. If anyone is able to point me in the right direction that would be appreciated.
