@zolotokrylin I considers these three contributions as the most challenging and rewarding during my tenure in Exodus. Feel free to ask any clarifying questions or any other questions.

Securing crypto wallet

Tech stack: react native, nodejs, redis, postgresql, Amazon Pinpoint

A large number of users of the mobile app crypto wallet were losing their funds because of the ease with which a 12-word passphrase could be misplaced. This passphrase is the one and only key to access one's wallet, and it is expected to be written down manually by the user. Recovery is also not possible as no system stores any 12-word passphrases. This we achieved by letting users store passphrases securely in their own cloud accounts, something like Google Drive or iCloud; thus, the system itself never gets the passphrase. The only thing the system is ever authorized to do is the usage of a passphrase for access to funds. Actually, our solution makes use of public and private keys under encryption. The public key allows encryption at the client side, but only the system has the private key for decryption. This ensures security while allowing the user to recover the wallet seamlessly, adhering to anonymous principles.

I was responsible in implementing this on both frontend and backend. Below are the overview of what I had implemented:

1. Implement signin/signout via Google and Apple account incorporating OTP
2. Once user start backup, encrypt 12-word passphrase on the client side using AES-256 and write it into files
3. Encrypt the AES key using the server’s public key on the client side.
4. Set the file name with SHA-256 hash of encrypted data
5. Upload file name and the encrypted AES key to the server for storage. This ensures the system cannot decrypt any 12-word passphrase that can unlock the funds.
6. Upload the file to cloud storage (Google Drive/iCloud).
7. Client requests to restore the backup by sending the file name to the server.
8. Server retrieves and decrypts the AES key using its private key and send it back to client.
9. Client decrypts the file using the received AES key and proceed to access the wallet.

Later I migrated all codes to Exodus SDK, letting any other Exodus platform to use these logic. This allows for a shorter development time and ease of maintainance.

I am proud of this due to the technical challenges and constraints while preserving security in mind.

Migrate payment from external browser to in-app

Tech stack: react native, Android and iOS native development

This was quite important during Ramp payment migration from a mobile browser to an in-app environment: accurate detection of the browser version. This was critical to ensure that users would be prompted to update their browsers for a safe environment when processing payments.

Well, the first problem to solve was detecting the Safari version on iOS. First off, we had tried using RNNFTUtils.getWebviewDefaultUserAgent(), but it returned a WebKit user agent string not containing any special Safari version info. This led to the creation of a native iOS module to identify SFSafariServicesVersion, which can be used for checking that the versions of Safari actually map directly to the version of iOS. Now, using this iOS version number, one can safely detect the version of the Safari browser and ensure that the browser is used securely.

The complexity came when Chrome was detected in Android, where Chrome had been separated from WebView. It turned out that, in the user agent string of WebView, it didn't describe the version of Chrome installed. We took predefined patterns of user agents for analysis and precisely detected Chrome versions. We implemented warnings for unsupported Chrome versions that call for updating to the very latest and most secure one.

Another critical issue encountered during the migration was that redirection back to the Exodus app makes the app crash. Using Xcode to debug this issue showed that it had something to do with the openURL function in AppDelegate. We resolved this by updating AppDelegate to include a new openURL function that included the correct options dictionary. This update would resolve the crash on iOS versions greater than 9.x.

We needed to build a native module for iOS and correctly detect Chrome versions on Android to provide a smooth and secure in-app browser experience. Having done all that, we successfully migrated Ramp's payment from having to pay in separate browser to the in-app environment, where it remains secure for our users, explicitly asked to use up-to-date browsers for better security.

I am proud of that since it improved transaction engagement by up to 5%.

Aggregated crypto news

Tech stack: Nodejs, Redis, Amazon S3, React Native

The user should be able to see the latest news related to the crypto space. The backend should provide news that is aggregated from multiple sources. News from sources shall be retrieved primarily via an RSS feed. My role will be to implement end-to-end the backend and frontend.

The challenges and how I overcame each:

• Cross-Site Scripting may give problems to readers, so we should strip out JavaScript, IFrames, Flash, and so on. The server shall remove the following tags: script, embed, object, frameset, frame, iframe, meta, link, style. These tags were obtained after observing several RSS feeds from multiple sources. Stored RSS feeds shall pass the stripping process.
• Some sources may utilize different versions of RSS feeds, where each new version adds a different set of field names. In that respect, the differences have been tabulated, and a normalization approach has been devised in order to standardize data from all versions for consistent data processing.
• Evergrowing numbers of RSS image to be stored requires utilization of Amazon S3 accompanied along with Content Delivery Network (CDN) to boost image delivery time

I am proud of this since as it encourages users to engage more extensively within the app.

• Online Resources: Websites like Stack Overflow, GitHub, and various online tutorials were invaluable for learning and troubleshooting.
