Is it possible to send a functionResponse object to the runner of an adk agent deployed on Agent Engine

I am trying to make a Human-in-the-loop interaction using LongRunningFunctionTool. The adk docs requires that once a human approval is made, a functionResponse object be sent to the session with an approval text.

As far as I can tell endpoint exposed by agent engine only allows for user messages to be passed in. Is there any way around this?
