Different users may expect different programs to work on a linux system,
in particular when testing out a (to them) new linux system.
For instance, for image manipulation, most people may expect GIMP.
Latest gimp in GoboLinux is this one here:
https://github.com/gobolinux/Recipes/tree/master/Gimp/2.8.22
Nuc1eoN updated it half a year ago.
Current GIMP is: https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v3.0/gimp-3.0.2.tar.xz
This one works quite well.
Which browser to use? Well - firefox, thorium, chrome ..

Nuc1eoN updated this three weeks ago.

We seem to be here at 136.0. Not bad.
Anyway, what is the point of this discussion or idea?
I think it would be useful to define a small subset of "expected programs", that is,
what users may expect to use on their computer system. We don't need to offer
"as many alternatives as possible", per se, but it would be nice if for the specified
"expected programs", we could be as much as up-to-date as that is possible.
For instance, for audio and video, I use ffmpeg + mpv. Others may prefer vlc.
Either way I think it would be nice to treat such key programs as first class
citizens that should, if possible, updated frequently and quickly. Naturally
I understand that this depends on people contributing recipes, so more
people active, more recipes, fewer bugs, more users, and so on and so forth.
Could we or should we come up with a list of some key programs? Like 30 to
50 or so, give or take, just to give a random number. These could be shown
somewhere, e. g. "preferred applications on GoboLinux"; could be maintained
on the wiki in addition or at the homepage. And we can look which programs
are "preferred" here. I mostly refer to applications, but the ffmpeg example
also shows that I think non-applications can fall in the same category.
Distrowatch makes a good summary between different distributions:
https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=gobo
If you scroll down a bit you can see which version GoboLinux uses:
You can compare the versions there.
For instance:
glibc 2.41 versus 2.30
Or:
mesa 25.0.3 versu 19.3.3
and so forth.
I am not saying these are all default applications as such, but gimp I would reason is, and a few more.
Anyway, this is just an idea mostly. :)
